I am trying to figure out which one is me, as I am feeling myself in more and more people where I can not relate myself.. For example, what is the deal with Cricket.. dont they get it .. how could India loose to Bangladesh or, Pakistan loose to Ireland.. How could Pakistan coach lie dead in a hotel room.. Hansie Cronje, capitan of the most respected and most professional team turned out to be a match fixer.. shouldnt everyone stop caring about Cricket ?

The concept of God and beliefs is one other thing that doesnt make any sense to me...

Anyway, one thing I can reason is, people are living in ignorance. It is a comfort to live like that. Like, in the matrix movie, the traitor who lives with the human ship once says, how much he missed the icecream on the street though he knew that was his digital self that was tasting a digital ice cream....

I am not much of a foot ball (NFL) guy, but when Seattle Seahawks play, I pause (beacuse of this.. NFL-ing). Yesterday was one of such days. It wasn't pretty to see them loose a game that they nearly won and loose by a nearly impossible field goal. Anyways, Chicago bears was a great team and playing in their home turf.

Having been at Super bowl (Super Bowl XL) last year (and lost), it was disappointing to see them out at Divisional playoffs.

Anyways, Seahawks you did well, looking forward to next season.

Wal-mart started promoting fluorescent lamps as they have much clear advantages over the widely used incandescent light — it uses 75 percent less electricity, lasts 10 times longer, produces 450 pounds fewer greenhouse gases from power plants and saves consumers $30 over the life of each bulb.

The bulbs cost about 8 times over the regular bulb. But they last longer though.
Light-bulb manufacturers, who sell millions of incandescent lights at Wal-Mart, immediately expressed reservations.

Well, this is not the first time some one put effort in to these kinds of things.. Compact fluorescent bulbs, introduced in the United States with much fanfare in 1979 by Philips just as the nation’s second energy crisis of the decade was getting under way, have never captured the public imagination.

Finally, is this bulb the solution to contain the growing energy demand? yes and no. There is the mercury inside the bulbs, a problem Wal-Mart is working with the federal government and environmental groups to resolve, possibly by collecting the bulbs at its stores or off-site locations for recycling.

Finally, why is wal-mart doing this ? God knows.., for now, I cannot stop admiring of what they are doing...

BP has launched a emission trading scheme, called TargetNeutral. It allows a driver to calculate the cost of the annual CO2 reduction required to make their vehicle CO2 neutral. An average car, driven 10,000 miles in a year, generates approximately four tonnes of CO2. To neutralise this amount of carbon emissions via www.targetneutral.com will cost around $37 a year. The money in turn goes towards CO2 reduction projects such as biomass energy plants, wind farms and methane capture programmes.

We all know there are two types of cell phone technologies. GSM & CDMA.

CDMA: For users, it provides no flexibility. It is like a black box. You can not do anything. Once you have a phone, it is preconfigured to a number and to a specific service provider. In US, Sprint & Verizon uses this technology and in India ‘Reliance’ uses. Once you decide to change your service provider, the phone is garbage.
GSM: Popularly, a technology that uses SIM card. So, you change SIM card, your phone will have a new number. Your SIM card is the key to your number and your service provider. So, by changing the SIM card, one can change the number on the phone and service provider too.. well, its not 100% true statement. Some phones are locked to a specific service provider. So, the phone will work with any SIM card from the same service provider. Of course, the phones can be un-locked.

Ya.. ya.. everyone knows this stuff. OK. OK. Actually, I wanted to just write the following, but brief introduction was necessary..
GSM cell phones come with the following frequency bands:
850/900/1800/1900 MHz

US uses: 850 & 1900
International: 900 & 1800

So, if you plan to use your phone only in US, go with 850 & 1900, else, go with Quadra band phones (850/900/1800/1900). There are tri-band phones. In that case, since most of the international uses 900, so if you have something like 850/900/1900, you are good in US and most of the international..

In fact, there is a popular notion that only 25% of the IT project are successfully code and implemented as was expected. People have been trying various models, like eXtreme Programming (XP) and other agile models to improve the success rate of the IT projects. Not sure, if XP made any difference, but some of the big companies use XP and they say it works for them. I hope the world is moving the right direction .. we heard about Nokia 770 that can run full version of Linux. I got chance to test-use this product. It looked pretty good, but a long way to go. Not enough memory and more over its not a cell phone... I will wait till, I get a product which is a PDA, PC, cell phone and IPod. It turns out that , neither UMPC or Nokia 770 do not fit in that league

I had always wondered and had to wonder again when I was shopping for an electronic item that I will be using in US(120V) and India(220V).. So, this stop I decided to stop wondering and start exploring.. here is what I found. Read on...

US being the first to pioneer electricity and bulbs., it had to use 120 V as the bulbs filament in those days could stand only that voltage. Now, with technological advancement in filaments, the modern day filaments can withstand higher voltages. Since, most of the US has itself established at 120 V, moving to higher voltage would require huge amount of money.

So, using 120V is good thing or bad ? It is bad thing. Here is why.....

Any instrument that works on electricity actually needs Power blend of voltage and power.

Power = Voltage * Current.

So, to achieve same amount of power needed to run a device in both 120V and 220V environment, the current factor has be adjusted. If voltage is less, current should be high and vice versa. The higher the current, the higher would be losses in the transmission. So, it is better to go with higher voltages so that lower current would be required. How high it can be.. is it advantage to go with 550V or 1000V, yes, but you have to have filaments designed to sustain such high voltages. More over, higher voltages are harzardeous and instantly kill people.

Realizing the advantages, Europe and rest of the world moved to 200 - 240V. However US doesn't seem to be doing so in the near future. The power companies are very stong in US and they lobby strongly against any govt regulations. More on how these power comapnies changed US life style when they were producing more power than the country needed.

It seems most of the big appliances in the US households work with 240V. The house receives 3 phases (120V Positive, 120 V Negative and other is neutral). I didn't quite understand how all this works. I will be exploring more on this later.

1. The West Coast Airliner Plot: In mid-2002 the U.S. disrupted a plot to attack targets on the West Coast of the United States using hijacked airplanes. The plotters included at least one major operational planner involved in planning the events of 9/11.

2. The East Coast Airliner Plot: In mid-2003 the U.S. and a partner disrupted a plot to attack targets on the East Coast of the United States using hijacked commercial airplanes.

3. The Jose Padilla Plot: In May 2002 the U.S. disrupted a plot that involved blowing up apartment buildings in the United States. One of the plotters, Jose Padilla, also discussed the possibility of using a "dirty bomb" in the U.S.

4. The 2004 UK Urban Targets Plot: In mid-2004 the U.S. and partners disrupted a plot that involved urban targets in the United Kingdom. These plots involved using explosives against a variety of sites.

5. The 2003 Karachi Plot: In the Spring of 2003 the U.S. and a partner disrupted a plot to attack Westerners at several targets in Karachi, Pakistan.

6. The Heathrow Airport Plot: In 2003 the U.S. and several partners disrupted a plot to attack Heathrow Airport using hijacked commercial airliners. The planning for this attack was undertaken by a major 9/11 operational figure.

7. The 2004 UK Plot: In the Spring of 2004 the U.S. and partners, using a combination of law enforcement and intelligence resources, disrupted a plot to conduct large-scale bombings in the UK.

8. The 2002 Arabian Gulf Shipping Plot: In late 2002 and 2003 the U.S. and a partner nation disrupted a plot by al-Qa'ida operatives to attack ships in the Arabian Gulf.

9. The 2002 Straits of Hormuz Plot: In 2002 the U.S. and partners disrupted a plot to attack ships transiting the Straits of Hormuz.
